Last week a local church decided to hold a religious revival/rally at TAMIU to show Laredo how gays can change their inner being through prayer.
The church is called Iglesia Misericordia (Church of Mercy). Where is the mercy that suggests that a certain population of the world is somewhat not good enough and must be transformed?
This “merciful” church must want to emulate the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas that believes all the world’s ills are caused by gays.
Sociologists suggest that between 2-4% of the population is either gay or bisexual. Gay history goes back at least 3,000+ years to the time of the ancient Greeks. If the ancient Greeks had overzealous anti-gay proponents, they would have prayed to Zeus to convert the gays to their thinking and the world would not have had the writings and philosophies of Plato, Socrates, or Aristotle, all gay intellectuals.
As a caveat, several states have outlawed “gay conversion” therapy, especially for minors. Unfortunately, young people that are told they are not good enough, are different, or that God does not approve of their lifestyle, have committed suicide.
(Pastor) Alvarado preaches that he was once a homosexual but that he was “cured” because of faith. The Bible teaches that we are all God’s children, so that if they are trying to change part of the population, they are implying that God must have made a mistake. How many anti-gay preachers in the past have been found to harbor innate gay tendencies and are usually outed by other gays? How many Republican legislators have introduced and passed anti-gay legislation and have later found to be closeted homosexuals?
I ask Mr. Alvarado what scientific credentials or proof he possess that proves that praying to an invisible deity can change a person’s genetic makeup by following a number of steps like A.A.
A recent Supreme Court decision appeared to side with a baker who refused to bake a cake for a same sex couple based on his deeply held religious beliefs. As a result, some businesses started placing signs reading “we do not serve gays here” on their business windows. That is classic discrimination based on “religious freedom.” That is no different than placing a sign outside your business that says we do not serve Blacks, Mexicans, or Jews.
It is unbelievable that some people still have the need to hate others based on their race, ethnicity, or whom they choose to love. We have gotten to this point because of voter apathy, low voter turnout and because the racists and haters have learned to organize and bring out voters that share their hate-filled mentality.
They say that every country deserves the leaders that they elect. We certainly did not deserve Trump or Abbott or any of the other Republican idiots that are tearing apart our Constitution daily.
No Mr. Alvarado, neither you, nor your merciful church can magically pray the gay away. Try compassion and kindness for all human beings instead.

David Almaraz
if Alvarado actually believes his own foolishness, I suggest he is deluded. Otherwise he’s just another liar and conman like Hagee, Jeffres, Osteen and their ilk.
