St. Augustine High School senior Victoria Lee Paez is the 2018 recipient of the President of the Republic of the Río Grande scholarship.

Her winning essay in the annual Webb County Heritage Foundation’s (WCHF) county-wide competition is a tribute to her grandmother, María Beatriz García, a role model for relentless hard work, adaptability, and commitment to the best possible education for her descendants.

Paez ably expanded on this theme to reflect on how this culture of hard work and desire for a better life through education is found throughout the majority of Laredo families. The touching composition is filled with admiration and love for her grandmother, a model of strength.

Paez, the daughter of Patricia Guajardo and Mario Paez, has listed the University of the Incarnate Word as her first choice for college.

Paez will be recognized at the WCHF’s annual Founders’ Day Luncheon on May 19 at the Laredo Center for the Arts.

For more information on the Founders’Day Celebration, or to purchase tickets to the event, contact the Webb County Heritage Foundation at (956) 727-0977.

  1. i just can’t understand that an essay would win a contest as such! Why would we talk about hardships when we can talk about how to help America better or how we can resolve this immigration problem that’s getting worse n worse! But if this essay was about her grandmother n family of their experiences that’s fine but I believe their are issues more important then this! But Ms. Paez your still a champ for competing good 🔮 fortune!☘️✌🏼🇺🇸
