Educational Symposium on Alzheimer’s Disease set for Saturday, May 19

The Alzheimer’s Association will partner with the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC to hold an Educational Symposium on Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, May 19, 2018. The event will be held at the UT Health Regional Campus Auditorium at 1937 E. Bustamante Street.

The symposium is free for family caregivers, students, and the general public. Donations are welcomed.

The symposium offers at least four hours of CUE’s for nurses and social workers for a $40 fee. Early registration is recommended due to space constraints.

Breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks following at 9:00 a.m. The first of the event’s speakers, Julie Kutac, M.A., PhD, will present an update on Alzheimer’s Disease Research at 9:15 a.m., followed by Dr. Mitzi Gonzales who will begin her topic, “Understanding and Responding to Challenging Behaviors” at 10:15.

Dr. David Gonzalez will address “Lifestyle Factors to Maintain Brain Health” at 11:30 a.m.

During a lunch break, Roy Lopez Jr. of the San Antonio and South Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, will moderate a question and answer session.

At 2 a.m., Yvonne Lozano, L.M.F.T., PhD, will speak on “The Impact of Family Dynamics on Caregiving.” At 3 a.m. representatives of AHEC and the Alzheimer’s Association will address the resources they each offer for caregivers, family members, and health professionals.

Closing remarks and evaluations begin at 3:15 a.m.
