Fifteen Laredo middle and high school cyclists, members of the Laredo Cycling Association Youth Team, competed Sunday, April 8, at Bluff Creek Ranch near Warda in northern Fayette County.
The race, called “Wrangle in Warda,” is part of the Texas Interscholastic Mountain Bike League series.
The scenic ranch with its piney woods, creeks, and verdant pasturelands offered a welcoming venue, replete with a herd of Longhorn cattle. Many of the Laredoans who traveled with their children to the race camped on the ranch
The Laredo team’s middle school division took second place in the Warda race, coming in just behind the South Austin Composite team by 81 points. The Laredo team, which is coached by Luis Dominguez, also took second place in the March 25 competition in Smithville.
The race for the state championship is a tight one, with only 393 points in difference between the top five teams. A rider who does not finish the race, could make the difference in team rankings between first and fifth place.
Results from the Wrangle in Warda are thus:
- In the girls freshman division, Marianne Bautista took second place followed by Idiana Dominguez in third place.
- In the girls eighth grade division, Emily Altgelt won sixth place.
- Katherine Martinez took sixth place while Sophia Granados came in twelfth place in the girls sixth grade division.
- In the boys junior varsity division, Andres Ramirez came in at ninth place, followed by Juan Ramirez in nineteenth place, and Samael Reyes in twenty-ninth place.
- Iker Jaimes Harsanyi took thirteenth place for the boys freshman team.
- In the boys eighth grade division, Julio Cesar Martinez took first place, with José Antonio Martinez following in second, Daniel Alejandro Musquiz in nineteenth place, and Matias Peña in thirty-second place.
