The Río Grande International Study Center (RGISC) and District V City Council member Nelly Vielma have sounded the call for Laredoans to volunteer for the Fourth Annual Post-Easter Cleanup at Lake Casa Blanca International State Park, which will take place April 3 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Easter day celebrants leave the Casa Blanca lakeshore, campgrounds, and picnic areas with large amounts of unsightly litter that reflect poorly on the users’ value for the recreational park, its fresh water lake, and its ecosystem.
At past post-Easter cleanups, volunteers have collected more than 10 tons of garbage.
Lake Casa Blanca International State Park Superintendent Jorge Martinez; assistant Park Supt. Terry Sims; and RGISC Project Coordinator Erika Saenz are spearheading the effort.
Vielma will serve lunch for the volunteers.
“I encourage everyone to come have some fun, help clean the park and enjoy a nice lunch, knowing you made a difference to help clean up our environment, our Laredo,” she said, stressing the need to clean up for the benefit of the wildlife that thrives in the lake ecosystem.

RGISC is Laredo’s only environmental nonprofit organization. It was founded in 1994 to protect and preserve our only source of drinking water – the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo – and local green spaces for the benefit of present and future generations.
