SYT’s Feather Fest: vendors & townsfolk celebrate the region’s avian celebs

San Ygnacio’s Feather Fest last Sunday in the historic Plaza Blas Maria was blessed with good weather and a nice show of vendors and townspeople celebrating the White Collared Seedeater and the incredibly diverse species that live in the area year-round, migrate through, or winter in the lush ecosystem of the Río Grande.

There were games for the kiddos, bingo for the grown-ups, a cake walk, and a lot of really good food cooked on mesquite fires.

If we were handing out prizes, we’d heap them on Wally and Zuri Paredes’ puesto — beef ribs, taquitos, white corn cooked on a fire, and homemade banana bread.

If you find yourself in SYT, enjoy the architecture, stop in at the recently restored Treviño-Uribe Fort, and check in at the River Pierce Foundation’s gift shop for souvenirs.
