The Wacky Nerd 5k run/walk organized by the TAMIU Master of Public Administration (MPA) Alumni and TAMIU Alumni Associations was held September 23 on the campus grounds of Texas A&M International University. True to its theme, the 5k race runners, walkers, and other community members raised funds for student scholarships while sporting nerdy glasses, suspenders, pigtails, and colorful knee-high socks.
Alumni who served on the Wacky Nerd 5k Race committee poured much creativity and hours of work into the event. They included committee chairperson/TAMIU MPA Alumni Assoc. vice-president Juan Espinoza,’10, ’13; MPA; TAMIU MPA Alumni Assoc. president Anita L. Guerra, ’11, MPA; TAMIU Alumni Assoc. President Mari I. Royster, ’11, MPA; TAMIU Alumni Assoc. treasurer Carlos Guerrero, ’17, MBA; TAMIU MPA Alumni Assoc. secretary Jodie Cordova, ’11, MPA; TAMIU MPA Alumni Assoc. co-treasurer Mike Herrera III, ‘72, ’07, MPA; TAMIU associate director of Marketing Mika Akikuni Kitao, ’02, MPA; TAMIU director of Alumni Relations Yelitza Howard, ’11, MBA; Rolando Gallegos, ’07, MPA; Naomi Cortina, ’15, BA; and Dr. Peter Haruna, MPA director and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The run/walk was made possible by the financial support of its sponsors — La Posada Hotel, Taco Palenque, Altitude Trampoline Park, Bodify, Gold’s Gym, Mike Herrera III, the Webb County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, Ripped Nutrition, Chick-fil-A, Convergys, Fear Haunted House, America Real Estate, McDonald’s, Graphix Signs, and Jischke Gymnastics.
Also contributing invaluable support were TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz; Dr. Thomas R. Anita Guerra of the TAMIU MPA Alumni Association, said the run/walk organizers and TAMIU Alumni Associations appreciated the significant support from the community to help meet the financial needs of TAMIU students.
