Organizers of the 2017 Laredo Walk to End Alzheimer’s are finalizing plans for the September 30 event at Texas A&M International University.
They are inviting team captains, volunteers, walking participants, sponsors, home health caregivers, and healthcare professionals and educators to take part in the walk.
Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m. in the walkway between the TAMIU Student Center and the University’s Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. after a brief opening ceremony that begins at 9 a.m.
Those who wish to register online and establish a fundraising team with family, friends, or co-workers can go to alz.org/walk and follow prompts to the Laredo walk.
“Forming teams is critical to the success of the walk. We are inviting family members who have been affected by Alzheimer’s to form teams, as well as educators who sponsor school organizations. Last year’s participants included Alzheimer’s patients. Their presence blessed the walk with an incredible energy and made us all the more determined to push forward this year,” commented walk co-chair Nydia Valdez said.
“We are also actively looking for additional sponsors. The success of the walk’s ability to raise funds rests on business sponsors and on the teams raising funds online and at the walk,” co-chair Melissa Guerra said.
Valdez said she is recruiting Laredo non-profits and home health care providers to set up informational booths and tents at the event.
Sponsors to date include TAMIU, ANB Cattle Company; Texas Community Bank; Falcon National Bank; IBC; Person, Whitworth, Borchers, and Morales; Staggs Cattle Company; Aramark; Frank Architects; Don Juan International Foods; Las Palmas Health Services; Champion Health Care; Coca Cola of Laredo; Orangetheory fitness; City Council member Charlie San Miguel; City Council member Alex Perez Jr.; Toni Ruiz; and Killam Oil. KGNS and The Laredo Morning Times are media sponsors of the event.
Donations by check or credit card will be accepted at the Walk.
The L.J. Christen drum line will lead the walk, and Bucket of Six will perform at the event.
The 2016 Walk brought 700 participants to the quadrangle at TAMIU for the morning event and raised $35,000 for Alzheimer’s research.
The Laredo Walk to End Alzheimer’s is held under auspices of the San Antonio and South Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
