A harrowing tale of suspense, intrigue, and drama takes center stage this weekend as the Laredo Community College Fine Arts Department presents its rendition of the classic Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex.
The production makes its theatrical debut at LCC this evening and will continue through Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m., with a special matinee performance slated for Sunday, June 18 at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theatre.
Prior to the play’s action, Oedipus has unknowingly fulfilled an ancient prophecy that told of his father’s murder by his own hand and his subsequent marriage to his mother, Jocasta.
The Greek tragedy centers on the search for the now deceased King Laius’ murderer in order to end a plague ravaging the city of Thebes. With a vow to avenge the King’s death, Oedipus begins his quest and travels through the countryside in search of his murderer. Unbeknownst to himself and those around him, the killer he is looking for is none other than himself.
Regarded by scholars as a masterpiece of the ancient Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex was a challenging theatrical endeavor undertaken by LCC Theatre Director William Hauserman.
“I thought that doing an ancient Greek play would be something new and different for Laredo. I chose Oedipus Rex because I felt that it is probably the best known and most recognizable title, which might spur interest,” explained Hauserman.
The play’s production will closely imitate the ancient Greek theatre traditions. The production will utilize the talents of three actors who will play multiple characters. In addition to these three principal actors, there also is a chorus of 10 actors. Much like its ancient Greek counterpart, the chorus will speak their dialogue in unison, with the exception of a few lines spoken by the chorus leader.
Costumes for the production consist of ancient Greek dress and a flurry of different masks to portray different characters.
“Understanding the historical nature of this production, I wanted to produce a play that has a compelling story and recognizable title that audiences can relate to. Clearly, this play has stood the test of time. It’s a performance you won’t want to miss,” Hauserman reiterated.
