The Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center (MRGBAHEC) is gearing up for summer academic enrichment camps designed for elementary, middle and high school students. The camps will be held at 1937 Bustamante.
The AHEC Mini Academy and AHEC Junior Academy will serve rising fifth and sixth grade students; and seventh and eighth grade students, respectively. These academies are designed specifically to stimulate the students’ interest in health careers. Students are exposed to age appropriate curriculum in science, mathematics, health science, vocabulary development, and a systematic approach for students to think about pursuing a higher education. Hands on activities are focused on biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
Summer camps for high school students are scheduled for June and July, and include the AHEC College Academy, Summer Biomedical Enrichment Program, and the Youth Health Service Corps training. Each of the camps are designed to promote health career awareness, encourage higher education, and offer leadership training. In addition, students interact with community leaders and learn to be productive volunteers. These students are invited to support underserved populations through community projects. Students interested in registering to participate in AHEC programs may visit www.mrgbahec.org or call (956) 712-0037 to receive additional information.
