The City of Laredo, the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library, and Congregation Agudas Achim will host the Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony on Thursday, April 20, at the main library at 1120 East Calton Road.
The ceremony, which follows a reception hosted by IBC at 6 p.m., begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s multi-purpose room. Featured speakers are Aarón and Esther Cohen, whose documentary, Paradise in Auschwitz, will be screened twice — initially on Wednesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room, followed by a second screening on Thursday, April 20 at 4 p.m. preceding the reception.
Heaven in Auschwitz recounts the fascinating story of 13 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust in former Czechoslovakia during World War II. These men and women were children living in the Terezín Ghetto (Theresienstadt Concentration Camp). They encountered a legendary Jewish-German character named Fredy Hirsch, who changed their lives forever.
The documentary describes the terrible living conditions in the Terezín Ghetto and the unexpected culture and art created within the walls of the concentration camp.
The reception, ceremony, and screenings are free and open to the public.
Laredoans of every faith and age are invited to attend. For more information, contact Renee LaPerriere at (956) 795-2400, X2237 or via e-mail at renee@laredolibrary.org
